The building was constructed by Frankfurt-based building contractor Philipp Holzmann, who was also involved in the construction of the Baghdad Railway. The building acquired its current appearance through multiple extensions and renovations. During the war in 1944, it suffered extensive damage, which led to its reconstruction a few years later and changes to the interior structure and parts of the façade. Today, the property on RoĂŸmarkt is a registered cultural monument of the city of Frankfurt. With its wood-paneled Frankfurt Hall, where board meetings were held, and the President's Room, from which the then head of Deutsche Bank, Hermann Josef Abs, directed the fortunes of the financial institution, it is a unique testimony to German banking history and one of the few remaining classicist-style buildings in downtown Frankfurt.
